NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS For centuries and in numerous cultures, people have made welcoming in the New Year an important celebration. In Western culture, many gather at midnight on New Year's Eve to drink a toast to the coming year. Certain Muslims in North Africa jump over lighted bonfires to purify themselves from evil. In other African communities, all fires are extinguished on the last day of the year so that new ones may be kindled on New Year's Day. In Spain, people eat a dozen grapes just before midnight symbolizing their hopes for the months ahead. The practice of making resolutions for the New Year is thought to have first caught on among the ancient Babylonians, who made promises in order to earn the favor of the gods and start the year off on the right foot. In a way, our New Year's resolutions of today are similar to these practices. We reflect back on the past year and try to list the ways in which we pledge to make our lives better in the coming year.
