Landscape Committee
As the new year has begun, it is also unfolding the new front
entrance for our Ocean Hills community. We wanted to introduce you
to some of the plants you can look forward to seeing at the entrance
on both the east and west sides. They are interesting in their color,
leaf design, variegated foliage and they are drought tolerant and easy
maintenance on top of their wonderful appearance.
• Pindo Palms are slow growers but at maturity will reach 15-20
feet. They are sometimes known as a "Jelly Palm" with blue-green
fronds that arch gracefully outward. The fruits or dates are edible,
thus the name, Jelly Palm.
• Rainbow Flax is one of the other outstanding varieties we are
planting in the mix of the landscape bed. It has dark salmon foliage
with dark green margins and scattered dark green lines. Its foliage
turns nearly blood red in winter, and then fades to blonde with age.
This flax will grow to three to four feet at maturity.
• The Cardboard Palm is another interesting and easy to care for
low growing plant that we are putting into the landscape. This is a
unique and exotic cycad as opposed to a palm. They add a dramatic
effect and can grow in full sun or partial shade.
• Another colorful plant we are adding is the Agave Attenuata, 'Ray
of Light.' This is an exquisite variegated selection that produces wide,
flexible pale green leaves, adorned with a white streak running the
length of each leaf margin. Emerging from a tight center, the soft
leaves arch back. Each rosette may reach four feet across. It makes
for a dramatic focal point in any landscape design.
• Variegated Ginger will also be a backdrop used in the landscape
design. The Genus Alpinia, referred to as shell ginger is brightly
variegated with yellow and green foliage that forms a dense column
about three to four feet tall. They bear colorful funnel-shaped flowers
and it grows in upright clumps.
Along with King Palms, Pygmy Date Palms, Birds of Paradise, red
Bougainvillea, Diamond Snow, Natal Plum and Leucadendron, we
will have a wide selection of beautiful and impressive plants to once
again highlight and showcase our community's entrance.
