Mitch Albom Welcome to February… The border between winter and spring. It is the month of love. Not only do we celebrate Valentine's Day, but also Library Lover's Day. The day is set aside to recognize library's importance, and the books it holds within. Therefore, it seems only appropriate to share some of the history of OHCC Library. As you enter the Clubhouse, the first room you see is a lovely room where a fireplace burns warmly on a cold February day. It houses our Community Library that was dedicated in May of 1984. It has been said that the cabinets that adorn the walls were purchased from a French Apothecary shop and later were brought to the United States and eventually made their way to the walls of our library. A Book Review Group was formed and from that the Library Association evolved. Residents donated many books, but most were old and of little interest to our residents. A story is told of a "Resident Angel," who donated $100, and the money was used to initiate the first buying program. An easel was placed in the library with names of new books. A wicker basket by the front door was the depositary for returned books. Money was always a problem. The shelves were beautiful but needed to be made functional. A renovation was planned by resident Dale Springer. He fashioned the cabinets and little drawers to be practical storage for books. A sum of $1,800 was earned from a Holiday Boutique in 1986, and a $1,000 donation was added from Leisure Technology. Seven volunteers worked on shelving and calling residents on the sign-up list. They were forced to lean over the shoulders of Clubhouse employees as no phone existed in the library. In 1987 ,they initiated the memberships fees of $5 per household. As time progressed other fund raisers were conducted. In 1994, the dues were raised to $10 per household, and it has never changed. All monies received were used to purchase new books and expenses incurred in its operation. By 2004, the staff had purchased over 3,000 books. Those seven volunteers had grown to 30. Our library was staffed five days a week. The once bare shelves housed nonfiction and fiction, the classics, resident authors and more. Newly published books continued to be ordered and by 2020, our shelves boasted a wonderful number of books called the "Reserved Book Collection" available to all members. Our library has never lost its welcoming appeal to all who enter. We have come a long way and owe a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers, past and present, who have made it possible.
