the friendship club Join us on Aug. 11, for an evening with Mark Preston and Special Guest Star Michelle Murlin. Mark is known internationally as "Entertainer Extraordinaire." This will be a return visit to our Sun Lakes Ballroom. It goes without saying how much our audience loved him. His shows combine almost every type of music with showmanship and ease rarely seen on any stage. He has appeared at Caesars Atlantic City, Claridge Hotel, Trump Palace, Harrah's Atlantic City, Harrah's Reno, The Virginia Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Treasurer Island Casino, etc. "Variety Magazine" dubbed him, "One of the finest entertainers in Show Business today." He was asked to join the "Letterman" and in 2001 was inducted into the "Vocal Group Hall Of Fame." Phyllis Diller referred to Mark as the finest voice around. Mark recently was put forward for three Grammy Nominations for his "New Directions" CD with Les Brown Jr's Orchestra. Michelle is proud of her theatre background, having performed in a wide variety of productions, ranging from Opera "Candide" to the rock musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Her favorite role was Adelaide in "Guys And Dolls." For the past 15 years, Michelle has been performing in the cruise industry. Info., Roz, 769-3757 or Bob, 845-4720. Tickets are $20/member, $25/non-resident guests. Sunshine Lady is Carol Howard, 845-2766. happy cookers' club Fri., Aug. 23, 11 am, will be our next meeting at the South Clubhouse. "Take a Quick Dip" is the subject of our program. Many interesting and irresistible dips to serve at picnics, cocktail parties, and dinner soirées, or late date nights, will be discussed and tasted. Last month in July,we celebrated "Summer's Best BBQ." The outdoor grills at the South Clubhouse were smoking and barbecuing brats to serve to our faithful club members. Salads and desserts prepared by several adventuresome cooks completed the summer feast. We even invited Bobby Flay for a Throw-Down with our main grilling guy Bob Kreider. Also last month, the Happy Cookers entry into the Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade earned us the "Spirit Award." Great job decorating the cart by Sandy Swenson and Patricia Sedlacek for the theme of the day Made in America. They used the Spam (made in Minnesota) idea from a previous program we had enjoyed and decorated the cart with cans of Spam. Sandy also offered free samples of Classic Spam and Turkey Spam to guests viewing the parade. Thanks to the wonderful John Russo of Johnny Russo Italian restaurant in Banning for presenting our June program on "Oodles of Noodles." John educated us on the different pastas available and answered questions regarding the cooking and seasoning of pasta — don't forget to salt the water. John's restaurant bakes and prepares bread, rolls, and sauces fresh daily. He also brought four samples of his pastas and sauces from his restaurant's kitchen and served us a very tasty lunch. Fabulous! karaoke & sing along Our group is going great! More than 60 people were at our last get together. We had fun dancing, thanks to KJs Bob Palmer and Ray Rendon. Bring your favorite CDs and join us for a fun evening out. This month's karaoke will be on Aug. 3, 7 pm, at the Main Clubhouse and Aug. 30, 7 pm at the South Clubhouse. See you there and don't forget BYOB. Info., Norma, 312-5220 or Ray, 797-3788. 18 | sun lakes lifestyles | august 2013 | social clubs & groups
