10 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JUNE 2022 | The flowers at The Lodge have changed from calendula and poppies to salvia and marigolds so that must mean that summer is on its way. As we approach the days of summer, the Landscape committee is working hard to make sure that our beautiful landscapes are watered wisely and ready for the heat of summer… and you should too. Here are some quick things you can do to prepare your yard for summer: • Check your irrigation system controller. Make sure that it's watering from 9 pm and 6 am. It's also a good time to consider transitioning to a weather-based controller. These controllers use current and past weather data to determine the best watering cycle for your property. Right now, EMD is offering rebates of up to $145 for weather- based irrigation controllers through SoCal Water$mart. Check the EMWD website for more information: https://www.emwd.org/ post/socal-watermart-rebates • Check your lawn sprayers. Make sure that sprayers are working and pointed in the correct direction. Not only are you conserving our precious water – you're also making sure that your plants are getting all of it. • Examine your drip system looking for leaks and clogged outlets. Drip systems are good for getting water just where you want it, but they do need checking. Our water has high levels of calcium which tends to clog drip emitters. You can clean clogged emitters by removing and tapping them lightly or removing and giving them a little soak in vinegar. If you use vinegar, be sure to rinse the emitters before putting them back. Keep in mind that drip systems and components have a lifespan of six to seven years. If your system has been in service for a longer period, it might be time to consider replacing all or part of it. • Mulch around shrubs. If your shrubs are watered by a drip system, cover exposed soil with a two- to three-inch layer of organic mulch. Be sure to water everything first before putting the mulch down. • Protect potted plants. If you have plants in thin plastic pots, consider buying a slightly larger, thick-walled pot to place them in. The second pot protects your plant's roots from getting cooked in the summer heat. You may also want to move your plants to a slightly shadier location, if possible. After you've completed checks, your yard should be ready for the rigors of our Southern California summer. Landscape Committee Social Committee I hope you enjoyed the Community Scavenger Hunt that was planned for May 21. Your Social Committee has some more events coming up. On Sat., June 10, our Annual Tribute Concert will feature the one and only "Elvis." Tickets went on sale on May 4. If you didn't get yours yet, please check at The Lodge desk. Our Community July 4th Celebration is next up. Wristbands for this go on sale on June 1 in the Card Room. We still need community volunteers to help with set- up on July 1st and/or the 4th. Then on Aug. 4, we will present an evening event "Hollywood Revisited — a Music Revue." These tickets go on sale June 29. And don't forget the Ohana Luau on Sat., Sept. 24. We have a busy next four months planned with a lot of fun for everyone. Please be sure to check your email for e-blasts and the Herald magazine for more information on each of these events. Also there will be flyers in The Lodge you can pick up. Question: What's wrong with this picture? Answer: The sprayer is leaking water, it's over spraying onto concrete, and it's running in the middle of the afternoon. Ohana is Hawaiian and is often referred to as "Family" but also refers to one's extended family, which includes friends and other social groups. Here at Four Seasons we have an Ohana community of various social groups so we think it is only fitting to call 9/24/22 Ohana, a Hawaiian Luau. A tropical adventure with games, entertainment and island food. Tickets go on sale 8/17/22.
