| OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2023 | 31 The OHCC Photo Club has several types of activities enjoyed by members. First of all, we provide the opportunity for learning. Not everyone, it turns out, knows how to use their camera! We'll sometimes have experienced photographers discuss the composition techniques they use and talk about the finer points of using "proper" cameras. But we also provide tips on using smart phone cameras, which get better with every new release. We sometimes have experts (notably Mike McMahon from the Carlsbad Senior Center) present information about photography and about the various software tools that are available. And since photography and computing have become joined at the hip, we try to help inexperienced users become more proficient with different ways of backing up their photos, and with using various photo editing tools that are available at no cost. No question is too basic. Additionally, we have occasional photo shoots, when we all go to the same location and take photos. Everyone's perspective is different, and it's amazing how different the photos end up coming out. Sometimes we get lucky and take advantage of a free month of admission for seniors at the Safari Park. During the COVID days we came up with some "scavenger hunt" ideas that could be done without leaving OHCC and without close contact. When we have a photo shoot, we invite each participant to select a small number of shots and send them in, and then we set up a slide show at our next meeting, so we can all review the results together and (gently) critique them. From time to time, the club will invite someone from outside the community to select the best photos. These will in turn end up as a hallway display such as the Reflections display in the hall near the fitness center leading to the pool The club's members are (mostly) not experts, but enthusiastic participants. Photography is becoming easier all the time and producing high-quality images is within the reach of everyone. And, once a year we get together and have a holiday party at our December meeting, if we don't have a bunch of viruses floating around. Dues are $8/year. Most months we meet at 1 pm on the third Thursday of the month in the Lamia Room, but check the schedule because sometimes we lose the room. See you there. Photography Inspiration Hill As we walk the trail at Inspiration Hill, we are always impressed by the varied community inspirations as expressed on the Donor Bricks. The trail begins by honoring our pioneer OHCC Founders, and continues with those who so bravely served us. There are bricks honoring family members, beloved pets, and favorite universities. What is your inspiration? The HOA continues to take orders for your own personalized bricks. Fill out an order form at the HOA office, and include a check for $75. Your inspiration brick will help line the trail to the top of the hill!
