18 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2023 | Spring is just around the corner bringing with it the hope of warmer weather and the end of frost delays and rain outs. The winter rain period experienced this year was welcomed by maintenance and they report that the golf course has held up well with no major damage due to frost or washouts. The ravine on the Executive Course has been monitored to ensure erosion is not threatening the golf course or the bridges. Golf course etiquette continues to be the one area that we, as a golfing community, seem to be failing at. The GAC, Golf Clubs, and Pro staff try to continually remind golfers that raking bunkers, filling divots, and repairing ball marks on the green are important responsibilities for all golfers. In spite of all the messaging, the feedback suggests that things are getting worse, not better. We are considering making etiquette tutorials to see if that helps. No one wants to think that Sun Lakes golfers are inconsiderate. The golf staff is working on putting out a video on the proper way to rake traps and repair ball marks. The GAC reminds golfers that for shotgun starts, please use the streets wherever possible when going out to your starting holes. If you are not sure of the route to take, please follow a playing partner or ask someone. Also, using the Championship #9 and #10 fairways to get from Country Club Drive to the Main Clubhouse/Pro Shop is not acceptable. We are seeing an increase in soil compaction, so please try to avoid unnecessary travel on the fairways. Golf Advisory Safety Advisory Residents have been running stop signs more often in addition to exceeding the speed limit. Some are asking for more speed humps which others despise. We just need to slow down. Some intruders are somehow getting by Securitas at the main gate and have created a nuisance for residents who didn't give permission to them in the first place. Call 911 immediately if this occurs. Resident gate locks are being pried open. Call Mark Schleiden and Securitas if this happens to your gate lock. Another cat was taken down by a coyote on the north side. Keep pets inside or on a leash if you see a coyote near your home. A resident reported that the homeless are sleeping on patio furniture at nights. If this is occurring on your property, install security sensors with the approval of the Master Architectural Committee. ~ Bill Bess, (951) 769-8022 Sun Lakes Committee Reports Library Advisory Everyone knows books are expensive and to purchase every book that might capture our interest would be pricey, indeed. That's where the Sun Lakes libraries can save you money. Through the generosity of many Sun Lakers who've donated several recent bestsellers, our collections are stocked with books you are welcome to borrow. In the Main Clubhouse hardback fiction collection, you'll find All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and the Rosie Effect. In the Main Clubhouse and North Clubhouse fiction paperbacks is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. In the North Clubhouse non-fiction is Hillbilly Elegy by (now Senator) J.D. Vance and Educated by Westover, a harrowing account. These are just a few examples of the quality books you'll find right here in Sun Lakes. Browsing our collections will reveal other finds too good to pass up. Speaking of saving money on books, the Spring Book Sale is March… Don't miss it! ~ Linda Taylor Lifestyles is a magazine that most Sun Lakers refer to almost on a daily basis to plan the events of their days, weeks, and even months. It tells us what's going on in our advisory committees, clubs and groups, what's happening and coming up in the Restaurant & Lounge, Recreation Department, our delegate assembly, and our Master Board. It gives us contact information for almost everything going on or available in Sun Lakes. Lifestyles began as a 24 page magazine and has grown to 80 pages in the past 20 years. In the months ahead, we'll be highlighting its history and contributions to our community. Lifestyles Advisory The Library Committee invites you to our Spring Book Sale - the best deal in town. Fill a bag with books, puzzles and audio books and only pay $2 a bag. Books for sale include mysteries, westerns, romance, fiction and non-fiction, hardback and paperback. Puzzles of all sizes and audio books will also be available. All proceeds go towards the purchase of new books for our libraries so it's win-win for everyone. There's no telling what treasures you'll find. See you there!
