Our garden tour last year was a huge success! It was not only a time to see some creative gardens, fountains, furniture, fencing, trees, shrubs, flowers and so much more, it was also a fun time to meet our neighbors and share ideas while enjoying some refreshments. Please join us on Saturday, April 22, for our Earth Day Garden Tour from 10 am to 1 pm. We will provide more details in the next The Colony News. If you would like to show off your yard or just something special in your garden, we would love for you to be one of the show homes. It is easy, fun and very rewarding. You can contact any one of us for more information: Brenda Sindorf, 951-698-7097, Gloria Brosky, 714-292-8507, or Jane Payne, 909-455-2253. Come bloom with us! Petal Pushers Garden Club By Jane Payne, 909-455-2253 SB 1383 and Organic Waste Collection Changes On Jan. 24, Kristen Crane, Assistant City Manager of Murrieta, Art Marquez, Public Sector Manager for Waste Management, and Mike Perez, Volunteer Coordinator and Master Composter at Riverside County Department of Waste Resources, came to The Colony to review SB 1383. This is the law requiring Californians to separate collected food scraps, yard debris and food-soiled paper from trash for organics recycling. This starts Saturday, April 1, 2023, in Murrieta and your green bin will become your "Organics" bin. Some of the most Frequently Asked Questions from the presentation were: Q: Can I wrap my food in compostable and biodegradable film bags before putting them in the organics bin? A: Even though cities in other parts of the state may be accepting these, they are not acceptable in Murrieta because the film and plastic interferes with the processing equipment used by Waste Management. As an alternative, if you prefer to wrap your food, you can use paper bags or newspaper. Q: Can we put meat or poultry bones in the organics bin? A: Yes. They go in the organics bin and you can wrap them in paper if desired. Q: What are examples of food-soiled paper that is to go in organics bin? A: Food-soiled paper includes paper plates, napkins, paper towels, etc., that were used in food preparation or dining. Q: Where do we put potato chip or other snack or candy bags? A: These, along with other plastic or film bags, still go in the trash bin. More information will be provided by the city and Waste Management as April 1 approaches to help everyone with transitioning to the new program.
