FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2023 53 "Tennis is best played, not watched" says Roger Kahn. Happily, this month we can do BOTH! Wimbledon is around the corner – July 3 - July 16. But before you turn on your A/C and sit down with your strawberries and cream, come out to The Courts and work up a sweat. Summertime is a favorite time of year for playing tennis. If you're a morning person, you can beat the heat; if you play in the middle of the day, bring your swimsuit and jump in the pool afterward; if you prefer to take advantage of our long summer days, come out and play in the evening. Whatever time of day you choose, you will find plenty of welcoming tennis players on the courts. For those who like to both play AND watch tennis, here are a few tidbits about Wimbledon you may not know: • The prize money for each Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Champions in 2022 was £2,000,000. • Martina Navratilova still holds the record for women's singles titles (she has 9), and Roger Federer holds the record for men's singles titles (he has 8). • Ball boys and girls work no more than 60 minutes at a time - then are given a break of sixty minutes. Here's one that may surprise you – Roger Federer was once a ball boy! He's gone from rolling tennis balls to representing Rolex – among other things, of course. Summertime is the season "when the water gets warmer, and the drinks get colder." In the five years I've lived at Four Seasons, I've become accustomed to the fact that 90 degrees is the new 80. I've also noticed that more people in our community are out and about at this time of year – more barbecues, more courtyard gatherings, more late-night walks to enjoy the stars. Summer has always been a reminder that fun has its own season. It's also a great time to add tennis to your list of fun summertime activities. See you all at The Courts! I moved here in May, 2021. What attracted you to Four Seasons? It's a clean, well-organized community with lots of amenities. What field did you work in before you retired? I worked for 20 years as an electrical engineer in defense industry and chip design, then another 20 in marketing in the Silicon Valley. I'm in the process of retiring now, divesting of a sign company. What are some of your favorite activities now that you are retired? My retirement goal is to play more table tennis, re-read the classics, study history, opera, and ballet. What interesting places have you traveled to? My wife, Barbara, and I took a river boat cruise up the Rhône for my 60th. And we will repeat in Bordeaux this fall for Barbara's 60th. How did you get started playing ping pong? I was a mid-week fly-in commuter to the Silicon Valley and took lessons and played in clubs in Palo Alto and Los Gatos. I had the good fortune to have taken lessons with World Champions Table Tennis. My warm-up partner was a then eight-year-old Kanak Jha, the current U.S. men's singles champion. What do you enjoy most about ping pong? I enjoy the physical and neurological exercise. I get a kick out of playing competitively with either hand. Would you encourage other residents to join our ping pong club and why? I think table tennis is an ideal sport. It's gentler on the body than full-sized tennis, but much faster so it's good for the brain. Also, it's less expensive and less time consuming than golf. ~ Niles Sundstrom Table Tennis Give him a ping pong ball or a small orange, Harvey can serve it. He is that good!
