e NBA playoffs are in the history books, so you'd think OHCC resident and Denver Nuggets Lead Scout Herb Livsey could pause and savor the season that was a long time coming. But while professional basketball has been his day job for the past 25 years, to most of us he's the face of OHCC pickleball, having taught hundreds to play over more than a decade. And this summer, even as he's busy preparing for the 2023 NBA dra, Herb and Mike Hoggatt created Team Camp, a pickleball class focused on playing together as partners. If you're at the HOA Monday mornings, you probably assume the raucous laughter coming from the courts is pickleball players. Guess again. It's paddle tennis regulars at their weekly drop-in. ey're joyous, irreverent, and always fun to watch as they play their small-court game with a deadened tennis ball and fat, brightly colored paddles (not racquets). e atmosphere is boisterous, with stories, jokes, and songs shared loudly. ey play hard (mostly!) and have a really good time. en there are those delicious, baked fresh that morning cookies that have become Sue Petersen's calling card. Everyone goes home tired, but smiling. Greg Smith is back in the village for the summer and recently offered several free tennis clinics for residents. e doubles clinic focused on strategy, positioning, and communications, while the two "refresher" sessions targeted groundstrokes, serves and volleys. e modest uptick in tennis – due in part to new residents who play – is making efforts by this USPTA Elite Pro, when he's here, sure to draw more players to the courts. Haven't played badminton for a long time – or ever? Head to the Clubhouse Courts Tuesday evenings and give it a try this summer. Volunteer coach Cliff Singh says badminton can be played by individuals of all ages, and skill is actually more important than physical strength. Equipment provided. With the Lanai currently offline, our very special summer event, "Summer Chill," is a BYO picnic to accompany the music of San Diego favorites – e Buckleys. Watch for the email announcement for this July 22 event. Also on the horizon: Pickleball Play & Stays the first Saturday of each month; Dinking Contest – Aug. 19; Cornhole Team Competition – Wednesdays in September; Game Day – Oct. 1; and Mixed Doubles Pickleball Tournament – Oct. 26.
