The goal of all the rules and restrictions on outdoor lighting is to provide adequate and attractive lighting without imposing on or irritating neighbors. Any changes or additions to outdoor lighting need to be applied for and approved by the Master Architectural Committee (MAC) before installation. Occasionally, lights that fall outside of the rules we all agreed to live by are being installed by some residents. Anyone planning on installing or mounting exterior lighting should consult Section 7.12 of the General Statement of Rules and Regulations. As a review, here's a summary of the rules. Lights are to be directed within a resident's property. Light posts with multiple fixtures are not permitted in front yards or rear yards of properties on the golf course. The rules state that fixtures with multiple lights cannot be above 45 watts per fixture, with single lights limited to 40 watts. Now, these rules were written when most lights were incandescent. Today, most lighting is LED, and lumens are the preferred method of measuring brightness. The MAC uses a standard of a maximum of 540 lumens. Light fixtures that emit higher lumens than 540 will not be approved. If installed without a permit, a violation letter with a potential fine should be anticipated. Rope or string lighting have their own set of rules. One type of rope/string lighting that is currently popular are the old fashioned "Edison" bulbs on a thick black cord. Like all types of rope/string lights, these cords need to be mounted securely and not viewable. Loose hanging, visible, and haphazard stringing of these lights is just plain wrong. No exposed wires or cables are allowed. Perhaps most importantly, lights should not produce unreasonable glare or illumination upon any neighbor's lot or on any common area (to include streets and sidewalks). Show consideration for fellow residents whether they are enjoying their yard or walking on the sidewalk. Our homes are close together, and we all want to live in an attractive community and have good relations with those who live around us. Keep the lights limited to your property, and keep the lumen level within the allowed limits, respecting your friends and neighbors. ~ Jerry Howell Master Architectural We meet monthly to advise and make recommendations to the Master Board and Recreation Director regarding the promotion and evaluation recreation activities. A suggestion was made that we create an ad hoc committee to work on the feasibility of charging the travel companies for coming in and soliciting business from our residents. The committee will do some research and report back at our next Board meeting. If you're interested in becoming a member of the Recreation Advisory Committee, application forms will be available in the lobby the first week in September. We will start out this month with entertainment by Renee on the Veranda on Sept. 5 from 5 to 8 pm. Our Lounge entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings is also very popular.
