42 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JANUARY 2024 | What is "Emergency Communications?" During a disaster event, communication with the community becomes especially critical. Emergency communications or "EmComm" may include alerts and warnings; directives about evacuation, curfews, and other self-protective actions; and information about response status, family members, available assistance, and other matters that impact response and recovery. Well-conceived and effectively delivered emergency messages can help ensure public safety, protect property, facilitate response efforts, elicit cooperation, instill public confidence, and help families reunite. The extent to which people respond to a warning message is influenced by many factors, including individual characteristics and perceptions, whether the message comes from a credible source, how the message is delivered, and the message itself. You have many communication tools to choose from, including in-person events, print and broadcast media, and Internet and social media. Each has advantages and limitations depending on your communication objective and the intended audience. Whatever communication tools you use, be sure your emergency communications are clear, contain specific and adequate information, are in sync with other information being disseminated, and are accessible to the whole community. Did you know that our Solera community has a few EmComm tools available to you. The best way to stay informed about community events, status, and situation is through the eBlast and Texting service. Visit the Solera Oak Valley Greens website to learn more and subscribe to both the eBlast (email messages) and Texting (messages on your phone) or go to https://soleraovg.com/stay- connected-with-e-blast-and-texting/ In addition, residents have access to a Solera concentric emergency communications system. Most of us know that conventional communication modes like telephones may become inoperaable at the onset of a disaster event. Residents will be able to use a handheld radio to communicate with other residents and city/county public safety assets. The service is free, does not require a license, and sponsored by the Solera Radio Club. To learn how to obtain a radio, visit the radio club website at: https://kc6src.net/Radios.html TRIVIA ANSWER FOR DECEMBER 2023: Question: What Block Buster genre was bought by a NCE radio station? Answer: On September 20, 1994, National Public Radio (NPR) purchased the rights from George Lucas for "Star Wars." The purchase allowed NPR to produce and broadcast renditions of the Star Wars genre over the radio. TRIVIA QUESTION THIS MONTH (Answered next month) What were the first words heard over a telephone?
