| THE COLONY NEWS | MAY 2024 | 31 After living in the Colony for three years, John Knitter, our wonderful tennis instructor, is moving in May. During his time here, the tennis program has flourished. He has provided free lessons to new members, drills for those wishing to brush up on their game, put together and trained USTA teams as well as fun Colony tournaments — and the list goes on! According to John, since his ability to play tennis is limited, he enjoys living vicariously through the players who have allowed him to assist them with their game. Modestly, he says, "I am a teacher at heart and continually work on my skills as an instructor, thanks to those players who have allowed me to help with their tennis game. The past three years have been some of the best in my life. I appreciate the community more than I can express." John will be moving to the small rural town of Mount Vernon, Kentucky, where he has a 12- acre parcel of land and where he will live near his daughter and her family, who will also have a home on the land. He plans to garden and, of course, continue to teach tennis. The Colony Racquet Club wishes John the very best in the next phase of his life. Thank you, John, we will not forget you! There is no news to report on the paddle tennis tournament, because (yes, you guessed it) it was rained out again! Instead, the time turned out to be a nice social get together in the Clubhouse, with some great snacks. This rain is going to stop, right? See you all on the courts. Racquet Club By Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194 Attention Colony Residents, We Need New Bowlers! Come join us on Thursday afternoons at 1 pm for a fun few hours of bowling with your friends and neighbors. We have a Summer League starting June 6 for eight weeks, ending August 1. No bowling on July 4. Teams are forming now. Contact Beverly Patten at 949-338-5539 or Hank Fleischer at 714-272-3684 for more information. The Fall/Winter League starts in September and ends in May. We are a handicap league, so everyone has a fair chance of bowling a great game. It's a wonderful way to meet your neighbors, get some exercise and have fun. As we are nearing the end of our season, we have Game On (Ali Holland, Andy Sciacca and John Haller) in first place, and Strikes Happen (Jerry Hanson, Beverly Patton, Jim Wheeler, Ed Monroe) in second place with only five weeks of league play left. Let's see which other team can give these teams a run to the end. Bowling Lynn Ennes Our Springtime Bocce Brunch Potluck was held on a beautiful sunny Sunday in April with about 50 people in attendance. There was an abundance of food and drink, lots of bocce playing, and tons of fun and socializing. I would like to thank Vanessa Rogers and Randy McKee for hosting this event. A special thanks goes out to Dave Matteucci for tending bar. The limoncello spritzes were very refreshing! If you are new to the sport of bocce and would like to learn to play, or maybe you just want to socialize with some fun Colony residents, come out any Thursday from 4 to 6 pm. There is no equipment needed. You are welcome to bring a snack and any beverage of your choice. Water and ice are always provided. We look forward to seeing you on the court!
