4 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2024 | By Beverly Simmons, Master Board 2nd Vice-President DID DID YOU YOU KNOW??? KNOW??? Did you know that tree maintenance is one of the many full-time jobs on the golf course? We have over 2,000 trees in Sun Lakes scattered throughout the property with the majority of them on the two golf courses. According to our golf course superintendent, Mark Burchfield, there are several different species of trees which all present a different need when it comes to maintenance. Perhaps the biggest piece of this care and the one most visible to the residents is trimming. This goes on year-round as not all trees are trimmed in the same way at the same time. Pines for example, need to be trimmed in the early spring before it gets too hot, while palm trees can be trimmed anytime. Did you know that activities on the Veranda are managed by the Recreation Department? They book the events out there and the monitors, who are directed by Recreation, set up everything. Linda Vang, the Recreation Department Manager, will block the space for you and work with you on what kind of set-up you need including registration tables, pop-ups, water stations and so forth. If you are serving food in conjunction with your event, then the Restaurant will get involved in planning your menu. These two departments work closely together to make sure all aspects of an event are covered. When planning an event on the Veranda, start with Linda and the Recreation Department to be sure the space is available for you. Did you know, with the Sandwedge currently our only F&B location, that foot traffic from the parking lot to the Sandwedge has increased dramatically? As there is no designated walking or driving lane, and golf carts are a whole lot faster than pedestrians, it's kind of a free-for-all! Please watch out for each other, especially around the corner near the Bus Room. Many of our residents don't walk very fast and many don't hear very well and often they don't realize a golf cart is anywhere near them.
