| THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2024 | 29 We welcome you to our Tuesday, July 9, meeting at 1 pm in the Annex, where we will have members available to give individual advice and consulting on your genealogy research. If you have roadblocks, dead ends, rabbit holes, or just want to learn more, perhaps we could be of help. Our members have online resources such as Ancestry.com and MyHeritage to use for free. Our meetings start promptly at 1 pm, so please plan to sign in at 12:45. For info, please contact Lennie Martin at (503) 269-9987 or lenniem07@yahoo.com. Our new member drive continues, and we invite you to join us. Dues for 2024 are $25 for an individual and $30 for a family. Contact Greg Griffes at mosesscrolls@gmail.com for a membership form. In May we finished our "Your Photo Workshop," during which six or seven members brought photos and talked about the story behind them, which included scary stories about houses burning down in forest fires, scandalous family romances, and finding unknown people and places in old family photos. It was one of the most engaging and conversational meetings that we've had in a while. If you would like copies of past presentations, please contact John Murphy at jemurphy77@yahoo.com or 951-698-1412. Genealogy By Greg Griffes, 951-383-9988 Greetings everyone. Let's welcome in the summer with a good, positive attitude and renewed self-confidence. The intense heat ahead can sometimes impact our health and well-being. We need to be prepared to safeguard ourselves against heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat strokes, or heightened blood pressure. Light- headedness or disorientation is a common occurrence when seniors experience unusually long exposure to the heat. This can result in untimely falls. I cannot stress enough the importance of staying hydrated by drinking lots of fluids as the weather heats up. Summer is also a good time to spend at least 20 minutes at the gym where the temperature is cool and conducive to light exercise as opposed to walking outside. If you are inclined to use our pool to swim, wade or enjoy the benefits of our water aerobics classes, it's still important to stay hydrated, even when you're in the pool. As a reminder, I will always be at our gym to help you each Tuesday (with rare exceptions) from 10 am to 5 pm. I am happy to assist you, at no charge, in correctly and properly using the equipment. To set up a free appointment with me, please contact our HOA receptionist, Cindy Irving, at (951) 677-4341. See you at the gym! Colony Fitness Center By Cece Gordon Did you know that the Wine Club is the largest club in The Colony? And why not? Everyone loves a great glass of wine. Fortunately, we don't live too far away from the Temecula Valley, a world- renowned wine region. Did you know that the Temecula Valley is home to nearly 50 wineries? The region's rolling hills and sprawling valleys produce a variety of wines including award-winning Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. What is your favorite? We welcomed Danza del Sol Winery to our Wine Club event in May. Our volunteer pourers served seven different wines, and dinner was a tasty taco bar. Cougar Vineyard and Winery led our Wine Club presentation in June. This family-owned, boutique winery prides themselves in producing quality Italian handcrafted wine. Their story spans over 25 years and three different states. We tasted six different wines and enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner. July's event is Wine Bingo and Tastings with Monte De Oro Winery. Researchers around the world have found that playing Bingo has multiple health benefits for older adults. Well, so does wine! Members will enjoy a few rousing games of bingo, taste the award-winning wines from Monte De Oro Winery, and nosh on heavy appetizers. Tickets were sold in the Atrium on Monday, June 24 from 10 am to noon, and 5 to 7 pm. And FINAL SALES for tickets (both member and guests) will be on Monday, July 1 from 10 am to 12 pm. Ticket price is $35 for members, $40 for guests. An old wise woman once said, "What do friends and wine have in common? The older, the better." Absolutely true here in The Colony! If you are interested in joining the Wine Club, please give Sharon Evans a call at 951-445-3861. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please attend one of the ticket sale dates listed above. If you cannot make it to the dates listed, you can have another club member purchase a ticket for you. Cheers! Wine Club By Valorie Hillerich Wine Club Board Members and Danza del Sol Winery representatives toast to the May wine club event.
