The Classic Film Group will be showing the 1936 Academy Awards for best picture, the original MGM picture Mutiny On e Bounty. The movie is based on the 1932 novel about the mutiny against Lieutenant William Blight. The movie stars Charles Laughton and Clark Gable. As the cruel captain of the HMS Bounty, a ship bound for Tahiti, William Bligh (Charles Laughton) wins few friends. When the crew members finally tire of his abuse, Fletcher Christian (Clark Gable) leads a mutiny, resulting in Bligh's unceremonious removal from the ship. While Christian and the remaining crew sail on to Tahiti, Bligh becomes intent on exacting revenge, and he targets Roger Byam (Franchot Tone), a sailor who had actually tried to stop the mutiny. We will show Walt Disney's ree Orphan Kittens on Aug. 27 and Sept. 3 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. This film earned Walt Disney his third Academy Award in best short subject (cartoon). The film tells the story of three kittens (one black, one orange, and one grey) and their adventures in a house. The Wednesday Western Matinee is canceled for this month. Sorry. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@gmail.com The Cinema Club has screenings on the second Sunday of each month. We screen films you won't find at the big cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films, and other little gems that don't get wide release. Our screening for this month, on Sunday, Aug. 11 at 6 pm, is Remembering Gene Wilder (USA 2024, 1 hr. 32 min., English). Here is a brief description from Amazon.com: "This loving tribute to Gene Wilder celebrates his life and legacy as the comic genius behind an extraordinary string of film roles, from his first collaboration with Mel Brooks in e Producers, to the enigmatic title role in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, to his inspired on-screen partnership with Richard Pryor in movies like Silver Streak. It is illustrated by a bevy of touching and hilarious clips and outtakes, never-before-seen home movies, narration from Wilder's audio book memoir, and interviews with a roster of brilliant friends and collaborators like Mel Brooks, Alan Alda, and Carol Kane. Remembering Gene Wilder shines a light on an essential performer, writer, director, and all-around mensch." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
