| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2024 | 45 Racquet Club e Racquet Club got the Lanai rockin' in late July with Summer Chill 2 — a reprise concert by popular local band, e Buckleys. Donna and Rob Ryan and their spirited corps of volunteers had the logistics organized to a "T." Music was the focus with a carefully craed seating plan for 260 that encouraged dancing throughout the newly-upgraded venue. A fantastic summer night! September is the Racquet Club's "cornhole" month with its Wednesday evening team competition that earns winners bragging rights for the year ahead. It's friendly fun at the croquet lawn – teams of four squaring off for four consecutive Wednesdays. Take a stroll. Come observe the 4:30 to 6:30 pm games. In August, Bocce Club president Jackie Crosby invited our members to join their monthly Sunday bocce and barbeque which included taking turns at both bocce and cornhole. is was a good warm-up for our September competition and a fun club-to-club interaction. Beginner pickleball lessons – free to residents – have started up again. Contact the Help Desk if interested. Small goup beginner pickleball classes with four to six students per instructor meet for four 90-minute sessions. Newbies are then prepared to go on the courts, play safely and have fun. In the fall we'll add novice lessons to build on the skills of those newish to the game. Paddle tennis offers free lessons as well. We continue to expand our instructional program by bringing in certified pickeball instructors to provide member-only instruction. e trial sessions proved quite popular and we'll experiment over the next months with a variety of lessons for different skill levels. Herb and Gerry Livsey, two of our most significant and beloved club members, will be the honorees at our Sept. 26 mixed doubles pickeball tournament, to be rebranded as the "Inspiration Games" this year. eir ongoing contributions to the growth of pickleball in our community as well as to the success of the Racquet Club, are unquestionable, and the RC Board is honoring them for their immeasurable dedication and service over the years. It's a fitting tribute to the couple who has gotten so many of us off our couches and outside onto the courts to enjoy the sport at many levels. A small uptick in tennis play has come about from more new residents moving into the community. Cindy and Greg Smith are periodically gathering those interested for some all-levels drop-in play – an effective way to make introductions and get more tennis action going.
