The July tournament with 11 foursomes has been posted in the history files. Forty- four golfers had the chance to go down as the tournament's first place winners in the Random Draw competition. As usual, it seems Mother Nature played a significant part in the event. Due to the forecast of late morning rising temperature, our normal 8 am shotgun start was adjusted to 7 am, which allowed for an earlier than usual finish. I can honestly say that it was a spirited, but hotly (pun intended) contested, tournament. Thanks, CA Oaks Golf Couse, for providing iced coolers of bottled water throughout the morning. The following teams posted winning positions for the tournament. Winning Teams 1st 50.603 Bruce Dalfonso, Sharon Smith, Randy Meyer and Denise Sturm 2nd 51.390 Terry Lundquist, Sue Jordan, John and Jenny Funke 3rd 53.329 Dennis Murphy, Marge Anderson, Mike and Leigh Tsumura 4th 53.997 Bob Miller, Debbie Johnson, Jerry and Pat Caldera Closest to the Pin #5 Women, Debbie Johnson – 6'8" / Men, Charles Craven – 11'7" #15 Women, Linda Peterson – 9'4" / Men, Rich Brown – 1'5" (now that was close) #16 Team #1B Bruce Dalfonso, Sharon Smith, Randy Meyer & Denise Sturm - 4'8" During the banquet, Linda Peterson was recognized for her hole in one in sinking a 100 yard tee shot on hole number 12 in June of 2023. DARWIN AWARD, Team or Person: Charles Craven Issue: Charles checked in as one of the earliest to arrive for our 7 am tee, but it was unknown where he was during and after the Adjusted Rules were being announced. His partner was left standing with bag and clubs having to dodge exiting golf carts not knowing where her partner and ride were to be found. I want to give a BIG shout-out to the courageous souls of Jack & Jill who braved the forecast heat and managed to gather and depart well ahead of the 7 am tee time. We did manage to tee up at 6:30 am. Of course, I had announced the evening before our tournament that DARWIN would be on high alert for any laggards. Our next contest is set for Thursday, Sept. 12, and it will be the Regular Scramble. As with all Jack and Jill events, you DO NOT have to be a member of either the Men's or Women's Golf Clubs to play. Just pick up your sticks and join us for the fun and friendly competition. See ya on the links! 32 | THE COLONY NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2024 | Jack & Jill By Dennis Murphy, 951-461-0457 Ladies Golf By Judy Lebovitz, 951-461-0065 Our August lunch meeting was so nice, and it included a delicious taco bar prepared by Gina's Kitchen. The back nine ladies cancelled play due to the excessive heat, and not many of the 18-hole ladies played. We have several new members, and we were pleased to welcome them at our meeting. We are in the process of planning our annual charity golf event on October 1, which should be great and fun day. We play a no-frills scramble, with all monies collected going to our two wonderful, worthwhile charities, Hospice of the Valley and Michelle's Place. There will be placards on the tee boxes in honor of or in memory of loved ones. Following play, we will have a delicious lunch, one including beer and wine. If you are interested in playing, contact me, or Anita Hoetker at 949-842-4873. No golf handicaps are required, and you don't have to be a excellent golfer. Just come out and enjoy the day. As I have said many times, our club has a great group of ladies, both in the 9-hole and 18-hole groups. We have fun tournaments. We are hoping for some cooler weather soon as the summer heat has not been good for playing. Please contact our Membership Chair, Peggy Clendenen, at 951-696-2169, if you are interested in more information about our club. We hope to see you out on the links.
