Newbies is the official welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents (homeowners and renters). We have quarterly potlucks where new and established residents can meet, mingle, and get to know each other. The gatherings are loosely structured and provide new residents with an opportunity to introduce themselves. Our goal is to have you walk away with new friends and a feeling of community. Club membership is the fastest and best way for new residents to make friends and become involved in their new community. OHCC has 37 clubs offering a wide range of activities. We encourage Newbies to join clubs and explore opportunities to be of service to others. Living in OHCC is truly a year-round summer camp and we're so glad you're here. This month we are introducing new residents TK and Karen Smith, who moved into their home on Corinthia in July 2024. TK and Karen met during college in Santa Cruz, CA. They lived in nearby San Marcos for 30 years where they raised their two daughters, who both live nearby. Karen's parents have lived in OHCC since 1998, so this community has been part of their lives for many years. TK's career was in commercial real estate software. Karen's career was in publishing community magazines and newspapers. Today, TK is partnering with Karen's mom (Ralene Friend) selling real estate within OHCC. Karen is supporting their team with marketing and social media. TK and Karen discovered a love of running about 10 years ago. Since then, they have run several full marathons and even 50K. In 2016, they renewed their vows for their 25th anniversary at mile 25 of the San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon. They were on the news and enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame! When they are not running, they enjoy riding their tandem e-bike "Daisy" or cooking up new plant-based recipes at home. Welcome, TK and Karen! The next Newbies gathering will be held on Sat., March 22, from noon to 3 pm on the Lanai. Details will be published well in advance. Abravanel Hall was filled with many happy folks listening to music, sharing delicious food, wine/beer, soft drinks, and OF COURSE, we had three table tennis tables set up. Almost everyone joined in the fun playing singles and doubles. Included at right are a few photos from the party festivities. Our Club generally meets in the Mykonos Room on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 3:30 pm. If the room is not required afterwards for another activity, the Table Tennis Tables often remain available into the evening for visitors and their guests for the rest of the day. Occasionally we also utilize the Abravanel Hall. Our Club offers instructions to beginners. And for training purposes to sharpen your game, we even have a table tennis robot machine that serves ping pong balls at varying speeds and with different spins. A weekly schedule email is sent to Club members - Our schedule is also included in the OHCC weekly activity printout at the Clubhouse Front Desk and on the OHCC Website Recreation Calendar. Do you have fond memories of playing table tennis "ping pong" in your youth? Well, here is your chance to return to this fun sport once again. The yearly dues for 2025 are only $12. To join, just drop off a check at the Clubhouse Front Desk and ask for them to place it in the Table Tennis Club Envelope. Please include your email and phone number on the check. Below is a letter of appreciation from one of our newer members. "Dear Stan, Eileen, Victoria, "I just wanted to drop a note telling you how much fun Bev and I had at the party Sunday. We estimate we played table tennis for well over two hours. It was so nice to see so many members asking Bev to play with them at the table nearest to the stage. As a new member I was taken back the first time I entered the Mykonos Room to play. It seemed like all games stopped and everyone welcomed me. I felt like Norm in the TV show, Cheers. "Then, the icing on the cake was winning a new paddle during the raff le. To sum it up, Sunday's party was one of the best parties we have ever attended. We are very grateful that we are members of such a friendly fun group." Sincerely, Morey Sherman Table Tennis
