30 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2025 We have all been well-versed regarding our fur pets during the hot summer months in Beaumont. But did you know there are also protections we need to take into consideration during our cold and windy winter months? How Cold Is Too Cold for a Dog Walk? While broad generalizations are difficult, cold should not become a problem for most dogs until the temperature falls below 45° F, at which point some cold-averse dogs might begin to feel uncomfortable. When temperatures drop under 32° F, small breed dogs, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old, or sick dogs could be in danger. Key Risks: • Frostbite: The most serious concern, where exposed areas like paws, ears, and tail can freeze if exposed to extreme cold for too long. • Paw irritation: Ice and snow can build up between the toes, causing discomfort and potential infections. • Slipping and falling: Icy surfaces can make it difficult for dogs to walk, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. What to Do: • Consider the weather: If the temperature is very low or there is significant ice on the ground, seriously consider skipping the walk or limiting to a very short duration. • Check your dog's breed: Smaller breeds/dogs with short coats are more susceptible to cold weather. Bundle your pup in an insulated, windproof, and water-resistant dog coat instead. • Protect their paws: Consider using dog boots to shield their paws from ice. Also, consider using coats and sweaters while walking. There are many varieties of sweaters and coats available through pet stores and online sources. • Shorten the walk: Keep walks brief in cold weather. Monitor your dog closely for signs of discomfort. • Wipe their paws: After walking, thoroughly clean your dog's paws to remove any ice or snow. If you take your dog for a walk and get caught out in the rain, be sure to dry their fur completely to reduce the possibility of catching a cold. The Canine Corral's new Saturday and Sunday hours for organized group play are now at 9 am until the warmer weather returns. We are always looking for members to join the Canine Corral Steering Committee. We meet the first Thursday of the month at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. ~ Barbara Morton, Co-Chair, barb93720@yahoo.com Canine Corral
