Written by Marshall Kelsay Golf Club April is here and spring is upon us at our beautiful golf course at OHCC! Articles are sent in one month in advance, hopefully we had our Guys and Dolls Tournament on March 15. e upcoming TA is April 14 at Native Oaks. is month our feature is on golf BALLS… What's all the hype? Why is there such a big price dierence and why do some players have superstitious feelings about the ball they use while others will use whatever and not care at all? e rst golf balls were completely smooth and in no time, golfers realized that as they got dimpled from hitting, they performed better because dimples on the ball reduced wind resistance inuencing li and trajectory. ere are no regulations on how many dimples are on a type of ball or the shape of those dimples once they meet 336 baseline dimples /patterns with some having 388 dimples. Balls measure 1.68 inches in diameter and are standard in golf. Balls are made with dierent layers giving each brand an ability to make balls 2, 3, 4 or even 5 piece or "layers" to achieve carry distance, spin rate and control dispersion. e top ball in golf is the Titlest Pro V1 and Pro V1X about $55 doz. ere is also new technology that works with launch monitors to provide outstanding data collection at about $70 dozen. Other companies use "so" outer shells like Bridgestone e6 made for slower swing speeds 80-90 MPH which make them a good choice for seniors at approximately $25 dozen. ere are excellent videos on YouTube about Golf Balls and how to nd one that works for you as well as being "tted" for the best ball for you just like clubs. Our practice area sports a variety of abandoned balls so you're likely to nd one you like to hit then go buy your own. My Monday teammate always says, "A clean ball is a happy ball" who carries a towel to each green for his "soccer balls." A fellow golfer asked me, "How do you know when you need to replace a ball?" I said, "When you lose it! As casual golfers we are not likely to rip o a cover like the pros! Having a signature ball adds to the fun of golf-go out a get yours and don't forget to mark it!
