26 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2026 Ad hoc Wildfire Mitigation Committee To Be Or Not To Be: A Firewise Community So what are we talking about? Residents reducing wildfire risk. Firewise USA® is a program managed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that helps communities in wildfire- prone areas organize and take action. It's not just about individual homeowners — it's about neighbors collaborating to make the entire area safer. Communities that meet Firewise requirements can become officially recognized, gaining access to resources, support, and sometimes insurance or grant benefits. Those who must enroll in the Fair Plan get a 10 percent discount. Previously, only cities could become Firewise and Beaumont was in the process of becoming one. Unfortunately, that program was abruptly canceled due to the loss of funding of the non-profit group managing it. Not wanting to abandon the effort in our state, it will now be managed by Cal Fire. It no longer needs to be a city-wide effort. A "group" can now be formed with anywhere from eight to 2,500 residences. With a goal of recruiting many Beaumont neighborhoods to become Firewise, Cal Fire is beginning with the well-organized senior communities. We have 787 homes in designated wildfire zones, however, you need not be in a fire zone to join. On Feb. 26 at 1 pm in The Lodge Ballroom, the Ad Hoc Wildfire Mitigation Committee will host a Town Hall where Cal Fire Captain Todd Hopkins, and a Battalion Chief will discuss the new fire codes and present the Firewise program for us to consider. Attend and bring your questions about the Firewise requirements (minimal), costs involved (minimal), and, if you are so inclined, sign-up.
