48 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2026 Our Book Club selection for April 14 is Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. Here is a brief description from Doug S. who will be leading the discussion: "In a small New Hampshire town, 17-year-old Peter has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his classmates. His longtime friend, Josie, has succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often does the harassing. The situation culminates in a horrible mass shooting at the school. In the aftermath, the lead detective investigating the violence soon learns that the circumstances are unclear, that memories are also unclear. Clouding the narrative are complicated small-town relationships among the detective, the victims, the lead witness, the shooter's parents, and the presiding judge. As Picoult asks, 'What would cause a 17-year- old to wake up one day, load his backpack with four guns, and kill nine students and one teacher in the span of nineteen minutes?' As with any Picoult novel, the answers are never black and white. At the heart of this seemingly simple novel are societal issues of bullying, mass shootings, emotional investigations, judicial ethics, and what it means to be different. The author's thoughtful treatment of the bullying, the indiscriminate shooting, and brief non- gratuitous sexual violence has led to this being one of the most commonly banned books in the U.S. in recent years. We will certainly talk about these issues and about the book's banning." Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am in the RCN, Room #3.
