26 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2026 | Blkrobn Lavender Farms If sunshine had a scent, it might just be lavender. This fragrant, drought-tolerant perennial from the mint family (Lamiaceae) has been delighting noses and calming spirits for more than 2,500 years. Native to the Mediterranean, lavender is famous for its soothing aroma, beautiful purple blooms, and remarkable versatility — from perfumes and cooking to natural remedies and relaxation rituals. Our April speaker, Beth Italia (at right), has turned this beloved plant into a way of life. As owner and farmer of an organic lavender farm in Ramona, California, Beth has spent the past 10 years cultivating fields of purple beauty. She sustainably irrigates her lavender with collected rainwater and personally transforms each harvest into healing lavender products crafted with care. Come hear how Beth's journey into lavender farming began, what she has learned working the land, and why this humble herb continues to inspire her every day. And there's more to enjoy! During the social time and for one hour following the presentation (11 am – 12 pm), Beth will offer products for sale from Blkrobn Lavender Farms, including fragrant sachets, essential oils, fresh lavender bundles, organic soaps, eye pillows, candles, and more. It's the perfect opportunity to bring a little calm — and a little purple — home with you. Event Details: Wed., April 8, at Abravanel Hall. Social time begins at 9:30 am., with the meeting starting at 10 am. While Garden Club membership is not required to attend monthly meetings, we invite you to join for just $10 per year — sign up at any meeting. Don't forget to visit the Share Table for gardening treasures, and we look forward to seeing you there! Written by Betsy Davis, OHCCgardenclub@ gmail.com Garden Club Beth Italia Penny and I were very happy to bring 12-year resident Grace along for a shuttle ride. Grace used the shuttle many years ago, but (as many of us understand) has had some serious medical issues that resulted in her needing to use a walker. She was not sure if she could still use the shuttle, but we encouraged her to try. Since the shuttle's profile sits a little higher than a car it may be a problem for some, but not for Grace. She is an amazing lady in mind and spirit, and I don't think much gets in her way when she sets her mind to doing something. With the help of our driver, she easily made it in and out. So, with her walker stowed in the back of the van off we went to Las Posas shopping center. Joining us for this ride were 2 regulars, Fran and Susan, who had shopping to do at Costco and Walmart. The three of us were off to lunch at one of my favorites - Boudins SF. Grace discovered that they had shakes, which I never realized, and she bought one. It was hard for me to stare at that delicious looking shake and continue to eat my soup in a bread bowl, but I contained myself. We had a lovely lunch, of course bringing some goodies back home. All too soon we were on the return trip home. So, what did Grace think of her shuttle ride? She loved it and felt comfortable enough to try it again. So, if anyone in the village would like to try the shuttle with us contact me at ellsiew@yahoo. com and we can arrange to go on a day that suits you. Written by Lynn Williams Transportation
