| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2026 | 29 Many varieties of butterf lies are gracing the garden these days, bringing movement, color, and life to every corner. The Monarchs, Cloudless Sulfurs, Cabbage Whites, and Swallowtails are among the most abundant visitors, f luttering from bloom to bloom in a steady, cheerful rhythm. Yet they are only part of the story — countless other species quietly find their way to this special place, each adding to the richness of our shared habitat. As the garden continues to grow, so does our commitment to these delicate travelers. With each new planting, we hope to create an even more welcoming sanctuary — one that offers nourishment, shelter, and a safe haven for generations of butterf lies to come. Popular Butteries in the Garden Our garden has become a lively haven for butterf lies, with several species returning regularly to enjoy the nectar-rich plants and welcoming habitat. The most familiar visitor is the Monarch butterf ly, easily recognized by its bright orange wings with bold black veins and white spots. Monarchs rely on milkweed for laying their eggs and are well known for their remarkable migration. Save the monarch butterfly Traditional summer is in full swing and may you enjoy the hopefully mild weather here in Ocean Hills. The Travel Club is busy planning day trips to parts of Southern California. Places we would like to visit and hope you will also. Here are our upcoming trips/events: June 18: Rescheduled from February due to rain. We will head to beautiful Balboa Park for a wonderful Architectural Tour focusing on the Spanish style buildings from the 1915-1917 Panama California Exposition. This will include the recently renovated Lily Pond and Botanical Garden. Following a lunch at Old Town Mexican Café, you may wander around Old Town checking out some of the many historical buildings. A few seats are available. July 4: Celebrate America's 250th Birthday on the Hornblower Cruise to view the Spectacular Big Bay Boom on the San Diego Bay. This is also sold out and has no more waitlist. Aug. 4: This is a Travel Club Favorite, Pageant of the Masters. The theme this year is The Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.) This trip is also sold out and has no waitlist. In the Works: • September – Possible visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific and Whale Watching • Oct. 1 – Our annual elections and program • December – Holiday Lights at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Frequently people on a trip need to cancel. Many people on our wait lists actually have had the opportunity to go on our trips. To be placed on the waitlist or to register for any of our trips, leave a check made out to the OH Travel Club, in the Travel Club envelope at the Clubhouse Front Desk. Add $5 to the price if you are not a member of the Club. You will receive an email confirming your registration. We certainly hope you will join us on one of our trips! Your OH Travel Club Board, Adele, Lynn, Amy, Jeannine and Callie Written by Amy Blount Travel Club Padres game April 29 Another frequent guest is the Cloudless Sulphur, a soft golden-yellow butterf ly that seems to glow in the sunlight. These butterf lies are especially active on warm days and are often seen f luttering gracefully among f lowering plants. The elegant Swallowtail butterf ly adds a touch of drama to the garden. Larger in size, with distinctive "tails" extending from their hind wings, Swallowtails are strong f liers and are drawn to a wide variety of nectar sources. Completing this group is the Cabbage White butterf ly, a smaller white butterf ly with subtle black markings. Though simple in appearance, they are constant visitors and can often be seen dancing lightly from plant to plant, especially near vegetable gardens. Together, these four butterf lies bring color, movement, and life to our garden. By continuing to plant nectar-rich f lowers and host plants, we hope to support and attract even more of these beautiful and beneficial creatures.
