Racquet Club Our early morning players need jackets now to get started, with the change of seasons. Enthusiasm is high for our beloved sport, even if the pros are having a break from the majors for a bit. Club members continue to be busy outside of Four Seasons as well, with USTA league and tournament play, and Senior Games. Randy Fedorchuk and his partner won level 3.5 men's doubles at the Lynn Scott tournament in Riverside in September, and Howard and Mickey Nelson went to the San Diego Senior Games and came home with medals in their respective age divisions, and qualified for Nationals – well done! Howard reported that "although there was a very small turnout we did enjoy playing at the old beautiful Balboa Tennis Club." It would be great to see more of our members at the Senior Games in Pasadena and San Diego, it is a lot of fun and the divisions are small so it's not too hard to come with a medal – maybe gold! We have a series of regular events for players: Play days continue on the last Saturday of the month, starting at 8:30 am. Please check the website, www.fsbrc.org, for specific dates. All players are welcome – if you haven't been out before, come join in! Every week, two of our members volunteer to help players improve. Randy Fedorchuk holds an instructional clinic for anyone at Four Seasons who is interested, followed by fun games on Wednesdays at 5 pm; emails are sent ahead of time advising of the theme for the week. Irve Sturner will hit with club members who would like extra practice, after he has played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, around 11 am. Come on out and hit! On two Thursday evenings every month, our mixed double league meets to play. As I write this, plans are well underway for our annual general meeting on Oct. 15. There will be a report on all the news from that event next time. Visit our club's website www.fsbrc.org for all the news. Keep your eye on the ball! ~Jo Fedorchuk Pickleball It is hard to believe that just over a year ago, we started the game of Pickleball here at Four Seasons. Since then, many have come and gone, for various reasons, but the game is flourishing and we all are enjoying our beautiful refurbished courts. Normally, I don't write articles from a personal point of view but this time is an exception. I just wanted to be able to say how proud I am of all of our players. Each and every one of you has shown great improvement, both in learning the rules of the game and the execution of the shots. It really makes me proud for I spent at least the first six months, every play day doing my best to teach you the proper game. It has really paid off. Just recently, a group of our players (Jesse Aceves, Gracy Luna, Marty Key, Nancy Barnaby, Padoo Peralta and yours truly, Linda Snipes) participated in the OLDlympics that were held in Hemet. Our hard work on the courts and our dedication paid off. Gracy Luna won the Gold Medal in her age group and Marty 38 Key won the Silver. The medals were handed out at a banquet on Oct. 8. So if you see them with "OLDlympic like" medals around their necks, you'll know why. I also recently participated in a tournament at Sun Lakes at the end of September. I won first place in the women's competition and also won the mixed doubles. Hard work (but fun work) has its rewards. I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as captain of the Pickleball club. I worked very hard to get us all the proper courts and various other things. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. It has been great. Unfortunately, it is time to move on. No - really - move on as in South Dakota. By the time you read this, I will be relocating to join my husband. I also will be teaching the game of Pickleball at the local Recreation Center in Watertown, five days a week. I am looking forward to it. On the flip side, I will miss you all. I want to send out special thanks to all FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2013 | SPORTS & Outdoor ACTIVITIES those who helped me and supported my efforts. You know who you are. Keep up the good work. Remember, "move up with the return of serve" and "stay out of the kitchen." If you haven't tried the game, our winter hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10 am, and Mondays at 5 pm for the advanced players. Come on out and join us. For more information, your new contact is my co-captain, Marty Key. Please call her if you have any questions at (951) 769-6369. See you on the courts! ~ Linda Snipes Linda Snipes is proud of the courts and nets
