Many of our cars came home with trophies. We attended shows at the Palm Springs Cruise Association, El Paseo Cruise Night, Dr. George (Fishbeck) Car Show, Pomona Hot Rod Association, Willow Springs Race Track, The Lakes, Menifee Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club, Baldy View V-8 Ford Show, Edward-Dean Museum, Beaumont Car Show, and numerous shows at Bob's Big Boy in Calimesa. We participated in Sun Lakes Club Day, the 4th of July Parade, and visited the Beaumont Fire Museum, Nethercut Museum, and Motts Big Barn in Menifee. After each monthly meeting, we enjoyed breakfast at local restaurants including Carrow's, Bob's Big Boy, Billy Reed's, and our own Sun Lakes restaurant. We also heard guest speakers during the year, including Danny McKeever, Roger Ford, and Bill Siuru. PLEASE join us as we begin a fun-filled 2015 at 8 am on Jan. 3, in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room, with breakfast to follow at Carrow's in Banning. For info, call Sandra Glickman at 692-6991. CAR Of THe MOnTH: Ken Brass fell in love with cars at age 10, when he entered his first soapbox derby. Through his working years with LAFD, he longed for a classic luxury car. In 2011 he realized his dream in a "Loyola Maroon" 1938 Packard touring sedan with dual side mount spare tires and hydraulic brakes. "I wanted a car I could drive, not just keep covered up," he said. He spent eight months refurbishing it, using materials specific to that car in that period. Ken entered his beloved Packard in The Great Race of 2013, a world-famous event for cars at least 45 years old. They raced from St. Paul, MN to Mobile, AL. "We traveled 3,000 miles in nine days, crossing the Mississippi River 17 times," he explained. "My navigator was a mortician whose wife came along as historian and beverage control officer." Of the 100 autos vying for prizes, only 76 finished the race, and Ken's car came in 68th. "It was a blast, although we worked 12-15 hours a day!" Altogether, he's entered his Packard in 15+ car shows, and won more than a few trophies. He's currently planning to drive his spiffy classic up the original El Camino Real, visiting all the California missions along the way. Bible Study Our Bible study group is non- denominational. All are welcome. We meet together every week for fellowship and study. On the first Wednesday of each month we meet for dinner before our regular meeting. Reservations for dinner are taken in the meeting the last Wednesday of each month. Bring your Bible, any version, and listen to or participate in our discussion of the evening topic. We're all learning together. We'd be delighted if you'd join us. We meet every Wednesday at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room.
