Tennis players were out to prove their worthy turkeyness the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Spurred on by generous prize donations from local merchants, they attempted to hit prize targets on the other side of the net. If they hit a prize, they won it. Simple. Right? Some of the prizes seemed to be unhittable. Jim Ball used the ever increasing flexibility of the rules to the max when he walked up to the net and rolled his tennis ball. He missed but this must have inspired Teri Comerford who later walked up to the net, lifted said net and bowled her tennis ball to win the final prize. It was great fun (see picture) with Mr. Tom Turkey (Paul Matejka if you don't recognize him) inspiring the contestants. The main purpose of the event was charity. In the end, this charity event raised $400 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Thanks to all who participated in the shoot and the raffle. Thanks to local businesses who contributed generously. Contributors were Papaya Bay Restaurant (Sun Lakes owners), Walmart, Victor's Restaurant, Farm House Restaurant, Wing's Garden Restaurant, Diamond Hills Auto Group, Jewel's Bakery of Banning, Fox Theater across the street from Jewel's. Sweetcakes by Bernadette Martin, and our new business in town Papa Murphy's take and bake pizza. Please remember these generous sponsors when you are out and about. Thanks to the 2014 board for all of their hard work planning and staging events. Now, with our newly elected board in place we are ready to move into the new year. If there was something missing in 2014 that you would like to see in 2015, please let a board member know. It might just be that all that it needs to happen in the new year is your suggestion. To get your mind in gear for the new year and in anticipation of our world famous Breakfast at Wimbledon event, who won the first men's championship at Wimbledon and what was the year? Two hints: it was not Roger Federer and the admission was one schilling. 38 | sun lakes lIfestyles | JanuaRy 2015 | health & spoRts Clubs Tennis Good exercise! A fun activity! Great people!
