24 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2015 | SOCIAL CLUBS & GROUPS Cruzin' Cronies The automobile industry began in the early 20th century with experimental vehicles, and developed into the production of luxury autos. WW II opened a booming era in manufacturing and design. After the war, mechanized factories continued to employ thousands of workers, the majority of whom were servicemen and women returning to civilian life. This unprecedented Industrial Revolution led to the creation of unions to guarantee workers' health, safety, and equal pay. The growth of roads and highways brought the expansion of suburban living. Teenagers and young people with an eye for style and beauty as well as mechanical and artistic abilities developed a love for the older, classic cars. Collectors, car clubs, rallies, and races came along, too, creating a culture of appreciation for workmanship, innovation, and specialized mechanics that is still present in the world today. We hope you've enjoyed the brief history of the auto industry that we've presented these past few months. Our aim has been to encourage new members to consider our club, the Cruizin' Cronies. Join us at 8 am, Sat., April 4, with our display of classic cars in the Main Clubhouse parking lot. Breakfast follows at a local restaurant. Call Sandra Glickman, 692-6991. Bible Study Our Bible study group is non-denominational. All are welcome. We meet together every week for fellowship and study. On the first Wednesday of each month we meet for dinner before our regular meeting. Reservations for dinner are taken in the meeting the last Wednesday of each month. Bring your Bible, any version, and listen to or participate in our discussion of the evening topic. We're all learning together. We'd be delighted if you'd join us. We meet every Wednesday at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. "That's the most beautiful car I've ever seen!" exclaimed 12-year-old Jerry Aarons, looking at a 1936 Cord. So began his life-long attraction to classic cars. Jerry grew up in Pasadena, "a hot bed of hot-rodding." His first car was a 1931 Chrysler Roadster. He's owned as many as 6 collectible cars at one time, including his favorite, a 1933 Auburn. Another favorite, a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera, was actually stolen from Jerry at gunpoint! His love for speed led to road racing, starting with his 1954 Jaguar XK 120M. With well-known driver Mickey Thompson, Jerry pioneered slick racing tires, which became standard in the 1950s. He's owned Austin-Healeys, Chryslers, Jaguars, Mustangs, Cords, Auburns, Ferraris, Porsches, and Corvettes. In 1957, General Motors asked Jerry to start the Southern California Corvette Club. In 1950, Jerry and his cousin began a ground-up, frame-off, total restoration of a 1931 Chrysler Le Baron. "It only took us 10 years!" Since 1985, Jerry has continuously owned Corvettes which he loves driving. At an upcoming Cruizin' Cronies meeting, Jerry promises to explain how the body, frame, and wheels cost him 2 bottles of Haig & Haig. Pictured is his present car, a 1990 Corvette.
