42 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2015 Racquet Club We've got a Blue streak going. For the fourth straight year, the Blue Team was the winner of the Red-Blue Fourth of July competition between the Red and the Blue teams captained for the fourth straight year by Irve Sturner and Howard Lyon. Strategically managing the roster of his team secretly selected in a smoke-filled room, Captain Irve came away with the victory by mixing up his players by ability level, avoiding the strength- against-strength approach that keeps scores close. Members of the Blue team, which had only two returning members, Irve and Steven Hovey, from the victorious 2014 team, included Julie Stayner, Larry Martin, Ray Windhorn, Jocelyn Green, Syed Ali, and Lyle "The Lobber" Cameron. The valiant but defeated Red team included Captain Howard Lyon, Louise Lyon, Padoo Peralta, Romy Villena, Richard Carrasco, Victor Flores, Peter Garan, Hilario Luna, and Loren DuChesne. Howard was going to be a non-playing captain until Louise misunderstood "Keep your eye on the ball" for "Keep the ball on your eye," and had to retire from the fray. For the women, Julie Stayner had the highest number of games won, while on the men's side, Richard Carrasco and Ray Windhorn tied with 18 winning games each. Cheering on all the players were Mickey and Howard Nelson and his infernal bicycle horn. The week before the Red-Blue event, the club held its first annual Not-Quite Wimbledon-Yet Play Day, with a full morning of professional coaching, social tennis, and a hosted luncheon at the Summit. Club members and guests enjoyed a catered lunch from Tacos and Beer, with Barbara Miller once again doing a great job with the lunch arrangements. Without any Wimbledon matches to watch, the gathered tennis aficionados shared stories from the long ago past about playing with and against prominent tennis players and famous folks. For example, following a tournament in Death Valley, the Nelsons ended up spending several hours in a stranded RV with the governor of Nevada. Irve shared that he had played against world-ranked #3 Zina Garrison. He and Howard Levine shared stories about playing with members of the Dick Van Patten family. The highlight of the day was once again the coaching and drills that Romy's daughter, teaching professional Aba, provided the members to get the Play Day started. The finals came down to Michael Berta and Perry White vs Richard Carrasco and Alan Chan. This match was all we could ask for. With the winners being the team that won three games first, each team won two games. Everything was on the line for both teams in game 5. When the dust settled, Richard and Alan took first place with Michael and Perry being our runners up. Richard and Alan received their trophies at the Fourth of July awards assembly in the Ballroom. If you would like to join Alan and Richard and many others who are looking for a fun way to exercise and keep healthy, and whether you are a beginner or expert, we would love to have you join us. You can find us in the Lodge Aerobics Room Monday through Friday at 10:30 am and Saturday at 11 am. Please contact Niles Sundstrom at (951) 572-5119 or Alan Chan at (951) 769-4202 if you have any questions or need more information about your Four Seasons' Ping Pong Group. ~ Niles Sundstrom Alan Chan and Richard Carrasco display the trophies from their Ping Pong Tournament win.
