FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2015 39 Counter Culture Cinema The Counter Culture Cinema Club has twice-monthly screenings of movies you may not find at your Cineplex: indie films, foreign films, documentaries, etc. Check us out! Our first September screening, on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 6 pm, is the film Deli Man (USA 2014, 92 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from Amazon. com: "This documentary focuses on Ziggy Gruber, who co-owns a large deli in Houston and is also the grandson of the original owner of the Rialto Deli, the first Kosher deli to open on Broadway in New York City in the 1920s. The deli is the main love in this man's life. While the film also covers other famous Jewish delis in Manhattan, Queens, Los Angeles and San Francisco and their histories, the emphasis is on the cultural aspects of the food and how the culture and the desire for this food is disappearing. There were once thousands of these delis and now there are fewer than 150 left in the entire U.S. Such luminaries as Larry King, Jerry Stiller, Fyvush Finkel, Freddie Roman and Alan Dershowitz as well as various deli owners express their love for the culture and the food." Our second September screening, on the 27th at 6 pm, is the film Clouds of Sils Maria (France 2014, 124 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from IMDB.com: "At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant to rehearse in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early. We hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
