| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | October 2016 | 37 By Micki Rosen, Four Seasons Beaumont Homeowner Did You Know? DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 20 IS WAITERS DAY? Anybody who's worked as a waiter for even a couple of days knows just how tough it can be. Waiters Day is a long-overdue day during which we should all show our appreciation for those who work long hours on their feet, often for minimum wage. Waiters Day was created by Fred Sirieix, the General Manager at the Michelin-starred restaurant on the 28th floor of the London Hilton. Sirieix thought it was high time to celebrate all such staff – from maître d's in fine restaurants to Starbucks baristas, from diner waitresses to cocktail bar mixologists. Fred Sirieix's goal is to stop servers from being perceived as unskilled and instead as hardworking people doing jobs which require many skills and can lead to rewarding careers. So be extra nice to your server today and leave them a generous tip! DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 29 IS CAT DAY? Cat Day was first created by Colleen Paige, a strong animal welfare advocate, to bring attention to the plight of the domestic cat. Cats are closely tied to humans, whether as pets or as feral animals ranging throughout cities and towns. As pets they are dearly loved and have been the source of some of the most ridiculous memes on the Internet, and have brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world. If you have cats give them an extra hug today; if you don't have cats, today is a good day to take a trip to the shelter and adopt some – they will change your life! DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 25 IS WORLD PASTA DAY? Did you know there are over 600 shapes of pasta known to mankind? And they have such descriptive names – did you know that linguini means "little tongues" and penne means "quills?" World Pasta Day was brought into existence as part of the World Pasta Congress in 1995, when experts from all over the world came together to discuss the glories of the noodle. This organization uses World Pasta Day to promote the eating of pasta, along with its cultural and culinary importance. DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 17 IS MULLIGAN DAY? Give yourself a second chance on Mulligan Day. Whether it is a former relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned, or a past mistake that needs rectifying, you can give it another go on Mulligan Day. Commonly used in games such as golf, the term "mulligan" derives from the 1920s when Canadian golfer David Mulligan made a mistake during a game and retook his shot. Since then, to "call a mulligan" means the chance to try again. So celebrate Mulligan Day by giving yourself another chance to do something that previously went wrong. You could also make Mulligan Stew, which is a "second-chance" meal made from the leftovers of previous meals. DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 4 IS TACO DAY? It is not known exactly when Taco Day originated, but tacos themselves have been around for a long time. They were first referenced by that name at the end of the 19th century, but the conquistador Cortez mentioned a meal prepared with tortillas as far back as 1520. Those would have been the soft wheat, flour or corn tortillas. Hard taco shells are a much more recent invention. Whether you prefer hard or soft tacos, use Taco Day to celebrate your love of Mexican food at one of our local eateries!
