Work by Artist of the Month Micki Rosen This is the perspective of the Artist of the Month, Micki Rosen: I joined Rob Kelman's Drawing and Sketching class almost four years ago, I had never tried to draw anything before that time. I saw the article about his class in the Breeze and thought to myself, "I want to try it!" I started with an elephant. Rob likes everyone to start with an elephant because they're such a great subject matter. At that time, everyone in the class was using graphite pencils on white paper. These days, I look around the class and am amazed at the art my fellow students are creating using all kinds of tools, including graphite pencils, colored pencils, pastel pencils, watercolor pencils, pastels, watercolor paints and many different kinds of surfaces. This picture, "Rooftops and Chimneys" was made using gel pens on Kraft paper- Rob's latest discovery which I am giving a try. Rob is an incredible teacher; he helps bring out everyone's hidden talent by teaching them to really see things. He is famous (in class, at least) for saying, "If you can't see it, you can't draw it!" He offers positive feedback and encouraging suggestions, which helps everyone advance and refine their art work. I also get great positive energy from going to the class and being with other students, as we all provide each other with support and encouragement. If you've ever thought about giving drawing a try, I encourage you to come to Rob's classes; a lot of my fellow students had never drawn before and you should see what they're doing now! It could be like that for you too, so come on by and see what you can do. You'll be amazed — trust me! We meet Mondays from 10 am to 12 noon and/or Wednesdays from 6 pm to 8 pm. Come explore your creative side. Because the Academy Awards show falls on one of our regular screening dates Feb. 26, we will only have one screening this month: Our only February screening, on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 6 pm, is the very different but very well-reviewed film The Lobster (UK 2016, 1 hr. 59 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or are transformed into the animal of their choice and sent off into The Woods." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen
