56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2017 "Love is in the air!" Many Four Seasons canine residents don't need Valentine's Day to celebrate bonds with their families – it just comes naturally, 24/7-365! Did you know that science is discovering even more about our dogs' ability to feel emotions? An article published in Psychology Today (March, 2013), shares that science has confirmed dogs have the same emotional development as a two-year- old human! Almost from birth, puppies are capable of excitement, distress, contentment, disgust, fear, anger, joy, suspicion, shyness, affection and love. They never develop more complex emotions such as shame, pride, guilt or contempt. This is no surprise to our D.O.G. members, who are very attentive to their dogs' emotions. We also know that the presence of a dog can make a positive, high-impact difference in the health and happiness of those around them – especially seniors! Enabling residents to provide great exercise, training, nutrition, and other needs for their dogs is the essence of what our D.O.G. does. D.O.G. is a great place to network for play dates, ask for help walking dogs, get referrals to great local resources and much more! Many pup parents in Four Seasons have owned dogs in their lifetimes, but they tell us that much of the information they are getting through D.O.G. is fresh and new. In other words, they weren't aware of all they didn't know! Those in attendance at our January meeting and on our email list have received updates on efforts to work with residents and community leaders to identify a suitable location within Four Seasons for an off-leash area, as well as other information that we know everyone will want! Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 19, at 7 pm in RCN 3. Please contact Martha at (951) 295-7209 with any questions or to be added to our email list or private Facebook Group. ~ Martha Baumgarten D.O.G. FOUR SEASONS D.O.G. OF THE MONTH Meet Shanti, whose name is Hindi for "Peace." This (f1) goldendoodle rescue might be the biggest puppy you will ever meet! At just 19 months, she still has many of her puppy charms, but she also has a serious side. She is a Therapy Dog in Training and one of her favorite things is sharing love during her visits with seniors and others. To her parents, Martha and Carlos Baumgarten, she's their Sunshine Valentine – every day of the year! ~ Martha Baumgarten
