62 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2017 | Pickleball Club Summer is in full swing and pickleball action is at its peak in Sun Lakes. With our growing participation, it has been a blessing to be invited by our neighbors to enjoy the game in venues around Beaumont and Cherry Valley. The Chatigny Center in Beaumont has welcomed our club members to establish some indoor play opportunities at their wonderful community center on Oak Valley Parkway and Cherry Avenue. With summer's heat, the air conditioned, spacious gymnasium offers an ideal respite. We have procured portable nets to create multiple courts within the gym. Continuing a very gratifying good neighbor policy, the folks at Highland Springs Village have invited us to use their terrific facility on a regular basis as well. We have been enjoying some great competition with the friendly HSV residents on their newly resurfaced courts. The community saw fit to convert half of their tennis courts to pickleball, and they couldn't be more appealing. We hear that Four Seasons is also dramatically increasing the number of pickleball courts, a growing trend in senior communities all over the country; something we highlighted in last month's club article. Some of our members ventured a bit further afield recently and found the courts in Carlsbad and Oceanside to be in great shape and the players there to be, as usual, most gracious and welcoming. We have also enjoyed playing at Freedom Park in Palm Desert and indoors at the city's community center gymnasium where the $5 day pass is well worth it to beat the summer heat (or winter chill in the Pass). With primetime court space so limited here in Sun Lakes, it has been great to find some alternate sites for people who don't mind traveling a bit for some fun play. July marks the club's second official party which is scheduled for the 22nd at the South Clubhouse from 5 - 9 pm. Our functions are always a lot of fun and guests are welcome. For details on the festivities or to learn more about schedules here in Sun Lakes or at some of the other venues, call President Royce Newman at 769-1103 or VP Nick Caputo at 255-7841. See you on the courts (wherever they may be!).
