This is the perspective of the artist of
the month Carol Teague.
A few months ago, a neighbor invited me
to join her at Rob's Creative Drawing Class.
I had never seriously tried to draw before, so I went not knowing what
to expect. Much to my surprise — and everyone else's — I discovered
a talent I never even knew I had. I owe this discovery to Rob's skill and
patience as an instructor and his consistent encouragement as a coach.
Rob starts off all his students with the basics, making sure we use the
correct tools of the trade, including the right pencils, erasers, and paper.
Then, by artfully helping us understand our first subjects — an elephant,
a landscape, and an old wooden structure — we learn perspective and
shading techniques that we will need for our future drawings. It's always
fun at the end of class to hear Rob say, "Put 'em down and put 'em up!"
which means it's time to stop drawing and hear him critique our work.
This butterfly is an example of my earliest artwork with pastel chalk.
As you can see, because of Rob's guidance and experience, not to mention
his keen eye, I was able to draw things I never thought possible.
We meet on Mondays 10 am to noon and/or Wednesdays 6 to 8 pm.
