FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2017 61 It was a nice late October day when the Take-a-Hikers took their second urban "hike" of the year. Urban walks tend to attract a larger group and even some non-hikers so our ranks swelled to 25 for the main event. We formed a caravan as we left Four Seasons and cruised up Pennsylvania Avenue to our first RR crossing. At the end we turned on to Oak Canyon and after crossing I-10 we were on San Timoteo Canyon Drive. Along the way, we passed the burn area from last summer's wildfire and the zebra in a local farm. After two more RR crossings we arrived in Redlands and parked at the Kimberly Crest Mansion. With an hour to pass before our tour, we explored Prospect Park with its view of Redlands and some of the historic homes of the early citrus farmers of this community. At the appointed hour, Kimberly Crest docents divided us into four groups for the tour of this home which was built in 1896 by Mrs. Cornelia Hill. In 1905, the Kimberly family (Kimberly-Clark) bought the property and added their touches. The house passed to their daughter, Mary Kimberly Shirk in 1920. In 1963, the property was passed to "The People of Redlands" (not the city) as an incentive to raise money to preserve the historical character of the park and grounds. Today it is operated by the Kimberly-Shirk Foundation and is registered as a Redlands Historical Landmark. The construction on our new courts began in November. We are converting the two old tennis courts into eight pickleball courts. We will finally have the room to really enjoy this incredible sport. No more sitting on the bench waiting for courts to open up. Now, with eight, we can have beginning courts, mid social player courts and advanced player courts. It will be a unique opportunity for us all to play together and at different levels. Another bonus is we have restrooms right next to the courts! We also have a lovely shaded area and walkway for social activities and special events. It is truly a win-win for all involved. The Tennis Club is happy at The Courts on the hill, and our dear paddle tennis friends will get their courts resurfaced and painted. They have been so generous to share with us for five years. Four Seasons now has three facilities to play court sports. Why not try them all? We play Monday through Thursday at 7 am; Saturdays at 7 am; Thursday nights are for entry level players with instruction at 6 pm. For info., contact Nancy Barnaby at rbarnaby38@verizon.net or (951 ) 845-0842. Come on out and meet some new friends. ~ Marty Key Pickleball Future site of our eight Pickleball courts.
