On November 1 Judy Cherpin was among the 11 members of the 45th class to successfully complete the Academy training program and graduate. Since the program's inception in 1993, the volunteers have provided an invaluable service to all of the Hemet community. On any given day volunteers can be found directing traffic, patrolling neighborhoods, watching over neglected and abused children, taking reports, delivering documents, fingerprinting, and performing many other duties. The volunteers donate their time and bear the expense of their own uniforms. They come from all walks of life and while many are retirees, others are still in the work force or attending college. Currently, there are over 80 active volunteers. Indeed, the program has become the envy of many surrounding communities and representatives from towns such as Banning and Menifee have contacted the department to find out how they can develop and implement a similar program. Besides Judy, other SDV residents Lynn Roppe, Millie Varia, Linda Weiss and Bill McNall also participate. Vic Varia is the coordinator for the entire group.
